JEFFERSON COUNTY – Weather permitting, on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation will close the left two southbound lanes on I-65 in order to finalize work associated with the raising of the bridges over I-65 North. Afterwards, the right two southbound lanes will be closed. The lane closures are expected to continue through the weekend, with normal traffic flow resuming early Monday morning, April 11th. The ramp from I-59 South to I-65 South will also be closed Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. until Saturday evening.
Work will continue the following weekend, April 15, requiring the closure of two southbound lanes on I-65 and resulting in traffic being reduced to one lane. Weather permitting, this work is expected to last approximately five days, with normal traffic conditions resuming the morning of Wednesday, April 20.
The scheduled work is part of Phase One of the I-59/20 CBD Bridge Replacement project. It involves constructing permanent transitions following the raising of two bridges on I-65.
Significant delays are expected. All motorists traveling southbound through Birmingham on I-65 during the two periods of construction are encouraged to adjust travel plans, or seek alternative routes in order to avoid congestion at the points of construction. The recommended alternative route is US Hwy. 31 by way of Fieldstown Road, Walker Chapel Road, or Finley Boulevard.
