BESSEMER — A man from Bessemer was arrested and charged with allegedly murdering his 2-year-old daughter, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 11:30 a.m. yesterday, deputies responded to a domestic violence call at the 1000 block of Manor Circle near Bessemer and discovered a 2-year-old girl who had been injured in her head and face. She was taken to an area hospital to be treated but later died of her injuries.
The suspect was identified as Ira Reid, of Bessmer, who police say was the girl’s father. According to the sheriff’s office, the incident was the result of a dispute between Reid and the girl’s mother. The girl was sitting in a car when her mother and father were arguing. When the mother entered the vehicle to leave, Reid allegedly threw an exercise weight through the window, striking the girl in the head.
The sheriff’s office said that Reid admitted to causing the girl’s injury and was arrested at the scene. He was charged with murder, shooting or throwing a dangerous object into a vehicle, domestic violence in the second degree, and domestic violence in the third degree. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he remains with a bond of $165,000.
