HOMEWOOD — The former home to Lovoy’s, a landmark restaurant in Homewood, has been demolished, according to a report by Sydney Cromwell of the Homewood Star.
Cromwell reported that the property on Green Springs Highway had been sold for $600,000. The future plans for the property is unknown.
The popular Italian restaurant was opened in 1955 by Frank and Juliet Lovoy in downtown Birmingham. In 1964, the restaurant moved to 420 Green Springs Highway in Homewood where it remained for almost half a century serving generations of families.
In 2010, the restaurant moved to Soho and then closed two years later in 2012.
The restaurant was owned by three generations of the Lovoy family. Frank Lovoy, Jr. and brother Tom Lovoy took over for their parents in the 1980s, later selling to Zac Lovoy, grandson of the founders, and partner Jim Levinson in 2005.
The dark paneled restaurant was a favorite for Birmingham families celebrating special occasions or just a night out for dinner. Patrons often stood outside or packed the small bar in one end of the building waiting for an available table.
Lovoy’s was known for it’s classic Italian cuisine and boasted several favorite dishes such as the lasagna and Baked Oysters Lovoy, the restaurant’s personal take on Oysters Rockefeller.
