The Hewitt-Trussville softball team placed third out of 44 teams in last week’s Bob Jones High School Softball Invitational tournament last week.
Hewitt-Trussville posted a 5-1 record in the tournament. Corner beat Baker to win the tournament championship. Hewitt-Trussville’s lone loss was a 3-2 defeat to Corner in the semifinals.
In the semifinal game against Corner, Tate Moseley drove in Kristen Bittle in the second inning and Maddie Dorsett scored on a Taylor Beshears single in the third inning. Dorsett and Beshears were both 2-for-3.
Leigh McAnally was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in Hewitt-Trussville’s 8-0 win over Florence. The Lady Huskies (24-8) then beat Ballard (Ky.) 5-3, scoring five runs in the sixth inning for a come-from-behind win. McAnally had a two-run double, Kimberly Mullins singled in McAnally and Devin Moseley singled in Beshears and Mullins for the five runs.
Hewitt-Trussville then routed Spain Park, 11-3. Mullins was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Amber Hammonds was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored, and Dorsett added three hits and two runs. Callie Shields earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Hewitt-Trussville defeated Class 5A No
. 1 Scottsboro 5-0 behind Mullins’ four scoreless innings in the circle. She struck out three before Shields pitched the final few innings, allowing just one hit. Hammonds had two RBIs, and McAnally, Mullins and Devin Moseley each had one.
Hewitt-Trussville’s final win of the tournament was a 2-1 victory over defending Kentucky state champion Mercy. Mullins allowed one run on four hits while striking out three. Beshears hit her 12th triple of the season, driving in Dorsett in the first inning. Tate Moseley scored the game-winning run on a Beshears sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The Lady Huskies host Class 6A, Area 12 opponent Gardendale on Thursday at 5 p.m. Clay-Chalkville’s softball team plays Friday and Saturday in a tournament at Pelham. Pinson Valley’s softball team hosts Class 5A, Area 11 opponent Moody on Thursday at 5 p.m.
