From the Trussville Tribune staff reports
BIRMINGHAM– As construction continues in Birmingham to improve the I-59/20 and I-65 Interchanges, the Alabama Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays this week.
While there are no current plans for full interstate closures, there will be intermittent lane closures and ramp closures on I-59/20 Northbound and Southbound and I-65 Northbound and Southbound.
- The Red Mountain Expressway ramp onto I-59/20 NB will be closed each night this week from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., as the contractor installs Girders for a new bridge.
- The I-59/20 SB ramp to I-65 SB will be closed Thursday night, June 7th, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday morning.
- The 6th Avenue North on ramp to I-65 NB will be closed Wednesday, June 13th, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., Thursday.
Drivers should also expect delays over the weekend on I-59/20 SB as two lanes will be closed from the I-65 Junction to Arkadelphia road. This double lane closure on I-59/20 SB will begin Friday night, June 8th, at 8 p.m. and remain in place until Sunday morning at 6 a.m.
Please keep in mind that all construction plans can change due to weather and other factors. As always, use caution and obey the posted speed limits.
Message boards and all necessary traffic controls will be in place.
This work is a part of Phase II and Phase III of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.
Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation to improve Alabama’s roadways.
