BIRMINGHAM — The Alabama Department of Transportation says that traffic delays are expected this week as intermittent lane closures and ramp closures will take place on I-59/20 northbound and southbound as well as I-65 northbound and southbound in Birmingham.
“This work is a part of Phase II and Phase III of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project,” ALDOT said in a statement.
The Red Mountain Expressway ramp to I-59/20 northbound will be closed this week from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. while girders for a new bridge are installed.
The I-65 northbound ramp to I-59/20 northbound will close on Wednesday night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to bolt steel girders. Traffic will detour to the 16th Street exit to get back on I-65 southbound before exiting to I-59/20 northbound.
The 6th Avenue North on ramp to I-65 northbound will close on Wednesday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on June 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area,” ALDOT said.
