A handgun was stolen from an apparently burglarized car in Trussville on Monday morning.
One man, who lives on Debbie Drive in Trussville and wished not to be identified, knew something was wrong when we was about to leave for work Monday morning.
“The console was open and things were in disarray,” the man said. “I called my wife to see if she had been in the car and she said she hadn’t, so I knew what had happened.”
Burglars had allegedly taken the man’s gun from the vehicle, but it isn’t known if it was the same weapon used in an alleged shooting between a resident on the adjacent Nichols Way and two black males early Monday morning. The gun holster was still laying at the end of the driveway.
“I’m praying not,” the man said.
Trussville Police Department Lt. Jeff Bridges said handguns were stolen out of two other cars in the last week or so in Trussville. He did not have those reports immediately available.
Bridges said Monday that city residents who park their vehicles on the street or in their driveways should lock their doors. Bridges said the police department has recently been investigating car break-ins that have been occurring all over Trussville.
One Trussville resident said this has happened in the Magnolia Street and Parkway Drive areas in the Cahaba Project in Trussville.
Bridges said all cars broken into have had unlocked doors. There has been no windows broken or forced entry into the cars, Bridges said. Trussville police is “actively” trying to apprehend the suspect or suspects responsible, Bridges said.
Bridges encouraged Trussville residents to lock their car doors.
