Trussville’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority hopes to vote Thursday on a lease for the vacant Food World building on Main Street.
Should a vote take place, it would then be up to the Trussville City Council to approve the lease and possibly an 0,000 tax abatement agreement to bring a grocer and fitness center to the site.
The authority meets at 7 p.m. at Trussville City Hall.
One man who attended Tuesday’s city council meeting said he heard the grocery store had pulled out of the deal. Councilman Buddy Choat said an agreement had been “finalized in word.”
Mayor Gene Melton said the goal is to get the grocer and fitness center in the space and the city out.
The city has spent about $22,000 per month for rent on the building since leasing it in October 2011. The city spent $250,000 to end a 15-year lease with America’s Thrift Stores, which had planned to open a store there.
The Food World building has been vacant since 2010.
