Tornadoes, Severe Storms and Straight Line Winds highlight Christmas Day weather concerns

Celebrate Christmas. Enjoy your family. But don’t take your eyes or your attention off of the weather today.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham continues to warn of severe weather potential for Central Alabama this afternoon and into tonight.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for Jefferson County, with the greatest area of concern coming after 2 pm on Christmas Day.

The report says the storm system could produce strong tornadoes, straight line winds and large hail. The threat will remain for parts of Alabama well into Wednesday morning.

Christmas Day tornado concerns are relatively rare, according to the NWS. The last time tornado warnings were activated in Alabama on this day was 2006.
