BIRMINGHAM –A 22-year-old man died this morning from a shooting in Birmingham on Saturday, becoming the city’s 31st homicide victim of 2015, according to Al.com.
Carol Robinson reported that a shooting death on Sunday night brought the 2015 total to 30, doubling the 15 homicides from the same period in 2014.
Last year, 2014 ended with one of the lowest homicide rates in recent history at 59. That almost matched the 57 of 2011, the lowest number of homicides since 1966, the story said.
“Last year was a miraculously low year because the city experienced no criminal homicides in January or February of 2014. It was an excellent start for the first quarter and set the foundation for the lowest homicide total in approximately 50 years,” Birmingham police chief A.C. Roper told Robinson. “This year has really been challenging thus far as we’re significantly higher than 2014 but tracking pretty close with 2013.”
