BIRMINGHAM — Tiara Pennington, Miss University of Alabama, was crowned Miss Alabama 2019 on June 8, 2019.
Pennington was the first African-American to be crowned as Miss University of Alabama when she won the title last November.
Pennington’s platform is raising awareness and finding a cure for psoriasis. She is the founder of Psoriasis Take Action. The platform is in honor of her mother and her uncle who both suffer from the common skin disorder. She has also been placing an emphasis on serving her community.
Pennington is no stranger to titles. She was crowned Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen in 2016 and placed first runner-up in the Miss Alabama pageant in 2018.
The Miss Alabama organization is a not-for-profit, offering scholarships to outstanding young women. According to its website, the program, at the state level, benefits all its participants with monetary college assistance.
The Miss America Organization and all its participants in state and local scholarship competitions support the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and its outstanding programs.
The Miss Alabama 2019 competition was held at Samford University’s Wright Center.
