WSFA is reporting that the Gulf Shores beaches have been closed following four drownings in 24 hours. Riptide warnings had been issued earlier.
According to the television station, 25-year-old Matthew Hattaway of Bossier, La., died on Sunday and 51-year-old John Hogue of Overland Park, Kan., died later the same day. The third and fourth victims have not been identified and authorities are still searching for one of them.
Local authorities told WSFA that beach goers should not be fooled by the calm waters. Swimmers could get a false sense of security, but the deadly rip currents are at work beneath the surface.
