Hewitt-Trussville head coach Hal Riddle said it’s “definitely a must win for us” against Huffman on Thursday.
And he’s right, because the playoff scenarios are confusing. Vestavia Hills is at the top of Class 6A, Region 6 with a 6-0 record. Shades Valley is 5-1, its lone loss to Vestavia Hills. Those two teams have secured playoff spots.
And here’s the confusion.
Mountain Brook is 4-2 in the region with losses to Shades Valley and Gardendale. The Spartans host Vestavia Hills on Friday. Hewitt-Trussville and Gardendale both hold 3-3 region records. Hewitt-Trussville has lost to Vestavia Hills, Shades Valley and Mountain Brook. Gardendale has lost to Vestavia Hills, Shades Valley and Hewitt-Trussville.

If Mountain Brook beats Vestavia and Hewitt-Trussville beats Huffman, the Huskies could get into the playoffs regardless of Gardendale winning or losing against Carver-Birmingham.
If Mountain Brook loses to Vestavia and Gardendale loses one of its last two games — to Carver or Buckhorn — Hewitt-Trussville could slide into the fourth playoff spot.
Of course, if Hewitt-Trussville wins Thursday and Gardendale loses Friday, the Huskies would be sitting well for the final playoff spot from Class 6A, Region 6.
If Mountain Brook loses and Hewitt-Trussville and Gardendale both win, a three-way tie for third place in the region will happen and tiebreakers will likely come into play.
The immediate focus for Hewitt-Trussville, though, is beating Huffman. Kickoff at Lawson Field is set for 7 p.m.
