BIRMINGHAM — A former purchasing agent for now-defunct Adams Produce was sentenced Monday to three and a half months in federal prison for his role in a scheme to defraud the federal government on contracts for fruits and vegetables.
Stanley Joel Butler II, 42, of Trussville, is set to report to prison June 18, according to Judge David Proctor’s order. Butler was also ordered to pay, jointly with four co-defendants, restitution of $481,000.
Butler is one of five former Adams Produce officials to be charged in an ongoing investigation into the fraud scheme.
Butler was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States in July 2013. The scheme allegedly aimed to defraud the federal government of $481,000. Butler last year agreed to plead guilty to the charge and to pay $481,000 in restitution to the government.
Adams Produce was founded as a family-owned business more than 100 years ago. The family sold the company to executives and a private equity firm in 2010. The company shut down and filed for bankruptcy in 2012.
