TUSCALOOSA — The Crimson Tide’s legendary gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson has resigned, citing health concerns. Patterson will undergo double knee replacement, she said in an open letter posted on the university website.
Patterson was the last remaining Alabama head coach hired by the late Paul “Bear” Bryant. Building the gymnastics program from club level into an NCAA powerhouse, Patterson matched her late boss by winning six national championships.
She was the first Alabama coach to win a national title in any sport other than football.

Patterson will be replaced by longtime assistant and former Tide All-American Dana Duckworth.
