CLAY — Clay-Chalkville scored the most points in a game in school history and cruised to a 65-14 win over Class 6A, Region 6 foe Huffman on Friday at Cougar Stadium.
VIDEO: Highlights and post-game reaction
The first quarter started with a boom when Cougars junior quarterback Tyrell Pigrome ran for a 72-yard touchdown in the first minute and a half. The Huffman offense came back firing with a 42-yard pass from Marvin Flowers to Cordarrius Leeth. Unfortunately for the Vikings, Clay-Chalkville (4-0, 1-0) never looked back, scoring four times before Huffman finally scored with 3:58 left in the first half on a 7-yard Demetrius Davis rush. At that point the score was 35-14 and out of reach.
Clay-Chalkville dominated Huffman (1-3, 0-2) in the run game, gaining almost double the rushing yards (322) with 14 fewer carries. Clay-Chalkville senior running back Terrelle West had eight carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Pigrome had a majority of the rushing yards with 75 and 2 touchdowns. Pigrome also completed 7-of-11 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Most of the targets were to T.J. Simmons, who had three catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.
As the rout progressed, players for Huffman became overly aggressive, which accounted for seven Huffman penalties for 55 yards.
Clay-Chalkville head coach Jerry Hood was happy with the way his team handled the situation.
“Last week I was very disappointed with the unsportsmanlike plays,” he said. “We had three of them. We took care of that this week. The kids handled a very volatile situation and came out and played with great class.”
Simmons broke the early 7-7 tie with a 71-yard touchdown reception from Pigrome, then West caught a 57-yard TD from the junior QB. Pigrome plunged for a 1-yard score early in the second quarter, followed by a West three-yard score. Clay-Chalkville led 42-14 at halftime after Pigrome found sophomore wide receiver Nico Collins from 15 yards out.
West scored on a seven-yard run midway through the third quarter, then Art Smith blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for the Cougars touchdown. Leading 56-14, Patrick Millican booted a 45-yard field goal late in the third to give Clay-Chalkville a 59-14 advantage. Brandon Berry’s two-yard run was the final touchdown of the game.
For Huffman, Davis rushed 22 times for 150 yards. Flowers was 6-of-18 for 132 yards and a TD.
