TRUSSVILLE — Can Hewitt-Trussville do it again?
On Sept. 26, the Huskies, then 2-2, traveled up Interstate 59 North and won at then-No. 3 and then-undefeated Gadsden City, 31-27.
Hewitt-Trussville will make that same trip Friday for the first round of the Class 7A playoffs. The winner of this game moves on to face the winner of Oak Mountain vs. James Clemens.
Hewitt-Trussville played one of its best games at Titan Stadium on Sept. 26. Junior quarterback Zac Thomas rushed 30 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 10-of-17 passes for 205 yards. Junior running back Jarrion Street carried 19 times for 87 yards and a TD.
At one point in the third and fourth quarters combined, Hewitt-Trussville had run 40 of the 42 offensive plays snapped between the two teams. The Titans ran just 11 plays in the final quarter, nine of which came in the final 1:45. Jarett Nelson and Devin Reed came up with interceptions for Hewitt-Trussville.
Gadsden City (8-2), the top team from Class 7A, Region 4, had last week off. The Titans will be rested and prepared. Hewitt-Trussville (5-5) is coming off its two toughest games of the season, losses to Class 7A No. 1 Hoover and Class 6A No. 1 Clay-Chalkville.
This seems to be the type of defense Hewitt-Trussville can overpower physically. It did so Sept. 26. Gadsden City is an athletic team across the board but especially offensively, but the Huskies have their own athletes on defense.
Can Hewitt-Trussville go into Titan Stadium and win yet again? Can confidence from more than a month ago carry over? Will Gadsden City learn from its mistakes of Sept. 26 and come out with a big home victory over one of the most dangerous teams in Class 7A?
Those questions will be answered Friday night.
