CLAY — They didn’t flinch when the eyes of strangers were on them.
About 10 Clay-Chalkville Middle School students participated Monday in a living museum in the school’s media center, titled “March Through History.” They acted as various famous African-Americans, telling visitors who they were and their contributions to society.
Student participants learned through research during February, Black History Month, and spectators learned about several African-Americans from student dramatization, student-made posters, and past and present pictures.
Students acted as President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, author Zora Neale Hurston, bandleader Dizzy Gillespie, tennis player and golfer Althea Gibson, track and field athlete Jesse Owens, botanist George Washington Carver and Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife Coretta Scott King.
Clay Mayor Charles Webster and his wife were the first visitors to Monday’s living museum.
“They worked hard,” Clay-Chalkville Middle School Assistant Principal Keith Hearon said of the students.
