TRUSSVILLE — A wreck occurred at the on-ramp to Interstate 59 southbound at the Chalkville Mountain Road exit today around 11 a.m. Trussville police and Trussville Fire and Rescue worked the scene where a van struck an 18-wheeler. Two people were injured in the accident. One was transported by ground to a local hospital and one was airlifted, according to Trussville Fire Chief Russell Ledbetter, with serious injuries.
The accident backed up traffic for an extended period of time in the afternoon.
According to Capt. Jeff Bridges of Trussville police, a Ford Mustang accessed the Interstate via the off ramp of the northbound lanes going southbound. At that time, the Mustang crossed the median at a high rate of speed to get to the southbound lanes when a van swerved to miss the car and struck the 18-wheeler.
The Mustang fled the scene and Trussville police are looking for the driver.
