Justin Macneill, accused of beating a man to death with a hatchet and hiding his body in 2015, has escaped from the Blount County jail, according to authorities.
Oneonta police are asking residents to stay inside while the search is underway. A state helicopter and dog team are participating in the search, police said.
According to jail authorities, it isn’t known which direction Macneill went following his escape nor is it known if he is armed.
Macneill is a white male, 6-foot 1 inch, 195 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Macneill was last seen just after 5 p.m. and was wearing a red jump suit with grey or white shirt.
Authorities say Macneill is considered dangerous and should not be approached.
