BIRMINGHAM — Just after 4:15 Thursday afternoon, deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 1900 block of Springlake Court near Center Point.
While deputies responded, it was reported that a suspect had been shot by the homeowner. Authorities arrived to find an adult male on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Information on the scene is that three suspects broke into the home. The homeowner was home and confronted the suspect, firing shots at them. Two suspects fled on foot.
Deputies are searching for them at this time.
UPDATE: Information on the scene has revealed that an eight-year-old boy had just arrived home and was alone. He called his father to tell him three men were knocking on the doors before he took cover under a bed.
Upon arrival, the father discovered that three men had broken into the home. He confronted the intruders and fired shots from a handgun. The other two suspects fled on foot.
Deputies are using search dogs in an attempt to locate the suspects. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notificaion of family members. This investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as they become available.
