JEFFERSON COUNTY –Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a blue Ford Crown Victoria in the 1600 block of Center Point Parkway at about 3 p.m. on Friday.
The suspect got on to Interstate 59 southbound at Roebuck Parkway and began traveling toward Birmingham where he soon encountered a problem with traffic congestion. A traffic accident had occurred earlier in the area of 31st Street which caused traffic to come to stop. Deputies stopped the pursuit due to traffic conditions.
The suspect then attempted to pass traffic on the shoulder and struck a barricade disabling his car. At that point, he exited the car and fled on foot. Deputies and Birmingham police officers in the area captured him after a brief foot pursuit.
A stolen handgun, marijuana and hydrocodone were found in the suspect’s car.
The driver has been identified as 26-year-old Corey Amous of Birmingham.
Amous was taken to the Jefferson County jail on charges of reckless endangerment, attempting to elude, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, carrying a pistol without license, and numerous traffic violations.
His bond is set at $59,500.
