JEFFERSON COUNTY — Sheriffs from across Alabama will converge at the Alabama Power auditorium in Clanton on Thursday morning to celebrate the success of Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Project Lifesaver program.
For almost five years, ALEA Aviation personnel have worked with Project Lifesaver International to recruit and train law enforcement agencies across the state. Alabama now has reached 100 percent participation.
Project Lifesaver is designed to locate lost individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease, Down syndrome, autism or other cognitive conditions that may lead to wandering. Clients who are fitted with bracelets containing transmitters can be found within minutes with Project Lifesaver equipment.
While Alabama is second to New Jersey in statewide participation, it is No. 1 in number of counties participating. New Jersey has only 21 participating counties.
Secretary of Law Enforcement Stan Stabler, members of ALEA’s Command Staff and Aviation Unit, Project Lifesaver founder Gene Saunders and others will attend.
Each of Alabama’s counties will be represented, including many of the state’s Sheriffs. In addition, some of the families members who had lost loved ones located through the program will be in attendance as well.
