BIRMINGHAM — UPDATE: The Birmingham Police Department has obtained a warrant against Richard Johnson, 27, for Saturday’s domestic homicide.
Johnson is currently at an area hospital being treated for his injuries, but as soon as he is released, he will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail and held on no bond.
ORIGINAL: A man was arrested Saturday after allegedly beating his boyfriend to death in a Birmingham apartment, police said.
Birmingham police said that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation following the discovery of the man’s body. The incident occurred Saturday night in the 6400 block of 1st Avenue South.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending next of kin notifications.
On Saturday, 12:30 p.m., officers from the east precinct responded to the listed location on two people fighting. Upon arrival, Officers found the victim lying on the bedroom floor suffering from what appeared to be blunt force trauma to the face, chest and head area. The victim was pronounced deceased by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.
Detectives learned the victim was in a dating relationship with the suspect. According to a witness, both men were inside the apartment fighting before officers arrived. The suspect was arrested on the scene and transported to the administration building for further questioning.
