BIRMINGHAM –Two people, one male and one female, have been shot at UAB, while students and employees were told to shelter in place.
At 10 p.m., police confirmed that one of the shooting victims had died during surgery. The other victim is in stable condition.
The initial call went out at 6:55 p.m. The all clear was issued at about 8:30 p.m.
The shooting took place on the second floor of UAB Highlands, police said. The hospital is in the 1200 block of 11th Avenue South.
The shooter shot himself in a third floor emergency room after shooting the two victims, Birmingham Police Lt. Peter Williston said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The male victim is in critical condition after being shot multiple times in the chest. He is being treated at the main hospital trauma unit. The female victim is being treated at UAB Highlands. Both victims are believed to be UAB employees.
UAB has issued an all clear.
All surgeries scheduled for UAB Highlands on Thursday have been canceled. All other hospital operations will carry on as normal.
