JEFFERSON COUNTY — Last week, members of the Sheriff’s Highway Safety Unit seized 82 pounds of meth during the traffic stop of a man from Mephis, Tennessee, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The street value of the drugs were estimated to be $1,500,000.
The traffic stop happened on March 30, when a Honda was seen driving erratically on I-59/20 near mile marker 104. Officers from the safety unit made the stop and was granted permission to search the vehicle by the driver, identified as James Robert Fields, 56, from Memphis, Tennessee.
During the search a “large bag containing several smaller bags of Mexican candy” was discovered. After examining them they discovered that the bags were full of methamphetamine instead of candy. Fields was arrested and later charged for allegedly trafficking methamphetamine. He was taken to Jefferson County Jail where his bond was set at $20,000.
