From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club heard from two guest speakers about the World Games at a meeting on Wednesday.
D.J. Mackovets, who is CEO of Birmingham’s World Games, and Jonathan Porter of Alabama Power Company and Chairman of the Games’ Board of Director, gave a talk about the event to be held on July 15-25 in 2021 in Birmingham. The World Games is an 11-day “Olympic-style” event to be held in Birmingham and surrounding areas.
“Mackovets said it is expected that this 40th annual event will be the largest sporting event ever in the state of Alabama and second in the southeast behind the 1996 Olympic Games,” the Rotary Club said in a statement. “Approximately 100,000 visitors are expected. It is estimated to have a $.25 (billion) economic impact. It will be televised live in over 130 countries and should include over 3600 athletes in (over 30) sports participating in 21 venues around the area.”
The Rotary Club meets at the Trussville Civic Center on 5381 Trussville Clay Road on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. For more information about the World Games, visit www.theworldgames2021.com.
