TRUSSVILLE –The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a tornado watch for Jefferson County until 1 p.m. on Thursday.
A storm system moving from the west to the east across the state could produce tornadoes, quarter size hail, and winds up to 70 mph. The system has produced tornadoes in east Mississippi and tornado warnings have been issued for areas in northwest Alabama.
Schools in west and northwest Alabama are delaying their opening until 10 a.m. There are no school delays reported in Jefferson County.
The line of storms is expected to arrive in the greater Birmingham area between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
