BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UAB Blazers closed out their season with a bowl game win, their first, in Boca Raton on Tuesday night.
UAB triumphed 37-13 over Northern Illinois in their first game since clinching the Conference USA championship title. The Blazers completed the season with an 11-3 overall record.
According to the official UAB Football website, redshirt freshaman quarterback Tyler Johnston III threw for 373 yards and four touchdowns, while Xavier Ubois set a Boca Bowl record with 227 receiving yards on seven receptions. Ubois received three touchdown passes.
The defense was spectacular, as well, with the official UAB Football website reporting that Anthony Rush shored up the line with five tackles, a sack and 1.5 TFL. Mar’Sean Diggs had 10 tackles while Chris Woolbright pulled off nine.
UAB compiled 476 yards of total offense and held NIU to just 287.
The victory cements the Blazers story: the UAB football program was shut down in 2014, but was brought back two years later as one of the best in college football.
