BIRMINGHAM — Nearly 48 tons of pre-made salads sold at national chains around the country have been recalled over fears of E. coli contamination.
The recall includes salads sold at Aldi, Target, Walmart, and at Domino’s Pizza, among others. A full list of affected products can be found here.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The products, each of which contain meat or poultry, were made from Oct. 14-16 and are stamped “Est. 18502B.”
The products were shipped to Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Restaurants and institutions that have purchased these products are urged not to serve them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
Seventeen people have been infected as a result of the outbreak of the E. coli 0157:H7 strain linked to the products. Seven people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
People infected with STEC 0157:H7 develop diarrhea and vomiting. “Vigorous re-hydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment; antibiotic treatment is generally not recommended,” according to federal authorities.
No cases have been reported in Alabama, according to the CDC.
