BROOKSIDE, Ala. (AP) — Police received a 911 call from a 7-year-old child, who told them a family member was seriously injured in a stabbing at their home, an Alabama police department said.
Officers responded to a Brookside neighborhood on Wednesday evening and found a man with severe lacerations covering his head and face, according to a police statement. The man was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The 7-year-old, as well as a 2-year-old child, were left there with the injured man while the suspect and his mother escaped, police said. The suspect was identified as the victim’s father, James Alvis. The two were arguing when Alvis slashed his son in the face with a knife, police said.
Alvis and his mother fled the scene just before police arrived, police said. He was arrested at a home in Adamsville and charged with first-degree domestic violence. His mother has been charged with hindering prosecution for helping him escape. Police said additional charges could be filed. It’s unclear if Alvis or his mother have lawyers.
The area where the stabbing happened is a known hot spot for criminal activity involving narcotics, prostitution and theft, police said.
“Earlier this week, officers responded to an overdose call at this residence where they found a female completely unresponsive and in severe overdose,” the statement reads.
That person’s condition is unclear, as is whether they are connected to the children, who were taken into state custody and placed with extended family.
