TRUSSVILLE — A neighborhood sign in Trussville was vandalized sometime overnight between Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, 2020, and the homeowner’s association president made changes, in hopes of deterring further crime in the neighborhood.
The sign at the entrance of Stonegate, on Boulder Drive at North Chalkville Road, was written on with a permanent marker. According to a police report, blue painter’s tape and letters were left on the sign. Some of the letters were “BLAK” and “BLFK”. Other letters on the sign were illegible.
Richard Mathews, the president of the Stonegate Homeowner’s Association, said he isn’t sure what the letters mean, but he hopes to remove them with a pressure washer.
“We figured it was probably a bunch of kids who were up to no good,” said Mathews. “Somebody with not a lot to do!”
The part of the sign that was written on is made of granite, so it has been difficult for Mathews to clean. The HOA is taking measures to keep the subdivision safe.
“I’ve been here 15 years and I’ve never had anything coming up missing,” said Mathews. “We’ve had a couple of incidents where some people left their garages open and ended up missing stuff, but beyond that, it’s pretty safe.”
Mathews said the timing on outside lights has been extended.
“We want it to be lit up more and we think people would be less likely to do anything if it’s lit,” said Mathews.
Mathews believes more than one person was involved in the vandalism. If you have information, call Trussville Police.
