CENTER POINT — The door remains open for two more Center Point football players as Devin Maghoumbou and Quinterrius Tanksley signed their national letters of intent on Wednesday to play ball collegiately.
The two players will stay teammates at the next level as both will travel north to play football at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
The private Christian university fielded a football team in 2019 that went 10-2 and finished the season with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Football Championship Series. The Patriots concluded the year ranked seventh in the final NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. They have recorded consecutive 10-win seasons.
University of the Cumberlands head coach Matt Rhymer has lead the Patriots to a 40-24 record in his six seasons at the helm.
One of Rhymer’s newest additions, Tanksley, had a monster 2019 football season for the Eagles. He recorded 49 tackles, one sack, 10 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles with one fumble recovery. His performance earned him second team All-Tribune honors on both the offensive and defensive line.
His skillset extends off the gridiron, as well. The senior is an Alabama state champion in shot put. He recently took home gold at the Martin Luther King Indoor Track Classic after edging past Wenonah’s Berry Tindle by 4 feet. Tanskley placed in first with a distance of 48-03.75.
Joining him in Kentucky will be Devin Maghoumbou. The senior offensive lineman was a steady anchor for an offense that was the fourth-highest scoring unit in Class 5A, Region 5. Maghoumbou was one of the few Eagles that were around to experience the hopelessness of going 0-10 in 2016 and improving upon that with a 1-9 season in 2017. Those seniors then witnessed a turnaround that began with the arrival of current head coach George Bates.
The Eagles advanced into the Class 5A quarterfinals this season before falling to Mortimer Jordan.
