CENTER POINT — Following the deaths of two young men in eastern Jefferson County this week, a vigil will be held in Center Point on Saturday to decry the continued rise in violence that has claimed the lives of numerous young men and women.
The “Refresh our City, Stop the Violence” vigil will be held at noon this Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at 2129 Center Point Parkway.
According to al.com, the vigil is being led by Bishop Stephen A. Davis and Refresh Family Church. The vigil follows the deaths of friends Derrick Marks and Delquan McNeily.
McNeily, 20, who was from the Grayson Valley area, was killed at Corey’s Barber Shop on Tuesday afternoon. According to a press release, the witnesses said McNeily got into an argument with another subject at the location. The argument then escalated into a physical altercation. At that time, a third person exited the barber shop and fired several shots at McNeely, hitting and killing him. The shooter reportedly fled the scene in a dark-colored Toyota Camry.
Marks was found shot within a car hours later in a parking lot at the Hunter Ridge Apartments in Irondale. He was rushed to St. Vincent’s East where authorities pronounced him dead.
Center Point Mayor Tom Henderson, Jefferson Sheriff Mark Pettway and Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Streety are all expected to be at the event, along with other community leaders, al.com wrote.
