Faith Community Fellowship Executive Pastor Mike Ennis, who also serves as a chaplain for the city of Springville, sat down to talk about the tragedy and how parents and classmates can cope with the loss.
“I think for students who know these individuals, and even for adults, the biggest thing I would say is be present,” said Ennis. “Be aware, acknowledge this is the reality. It’s important for everybody to acknowledge the difficulty.”
Parkerson played football for the Huskies and was also on the wrestling team. Pastor Ennis said for those who knew Parkerson, this time will be very difficult.
“Be patient,” he said. “There is no formula for grief or trauma. Everybody is going to handle it differently. Be patient with one another.”
Ennis also said since emotions will vary, it’s important for each individual to validate the feelings of others. For parents, Ennis said there is help.
“I would really say to parents, check on your kids,” said Ennis. “You are going to see different behavior, maybe you will see them acting out in different ways. Talk to your kids.”
Ennis has set up a resource for parents and friends of those involved. You can text TALK to (205) 707-9150 for help.
“They are not alone,” said Ennis. “There are people on the outside that can help and that’s okay.”
Trussville Police have the suspected shooter in custody. He is 17-years-old and authorities have not released his identity.
