BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Police said the death of a man at Marino’s Grocery Store on Friday, April 17, 2020, has been ruled justifiable. Marino’s is located in west Birmingham, at 2415 Ave E.
Investigators said Gregory Johnson, 50, of Birmingham, was rendered unconscious by a security guard after witnesses said Johnson became disorderly.
“The security guard escorted the subject out of the store and left the location for a short time before returning to the property,” police said in a statement. “The subject and the security guard then became engaged in a physical altercation which led to the subject being rendered unconscious.”
When police arrived on the scene, Johnson had already been handcuffed, by the security guard, and was unconscious. He was taken to Princeton Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions of the security guard were justified as defense.
