TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Schools Board of Education met in a Zoom meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2020. Trussville City Council liaison Jef Freeman joined in on the meeting and gave some updates from the city.
Among agenda items approved on consent were the 2020-21 Student Code of Conduct, new software and license renewals.
Paine Elementary School Principal Dr. Lisa Lothspeich was also approved to participate in a research study for the Doctoral Program at Samford University.
The BOE elected 2020-21 school year board officers during the meeting. For the next year, Board President will be Kathy Brown, Vice President will be Steve Ward and Secretary will be Superintendent Dr. Pattie Neill. Brown, Ward and Neill were already serving in those positions. Board elections are done every May. Dr. Neill said she is happy with the work the BOE has done.
The results from the Classroom to Cloud parent survey were revealed during the meeting. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Lisa Berry presented the results. Overall, parents were happy with the platform and with communication by teachers and school administrators.
99.2% of parents said their family’s basic needs, including clothing, shelter and mental health support, are being met during the extended school closure. Berry said the school system reached out to the two to three families whose basic needs were not being met and helped them with their individual needs through the Neighborhood Bridges program. Board President Kathy Brown said making sure no one is doing without was the most important survey question answered.
1,069 parents participated in the survey.
Superintendent Neill said communication continues between the Alabama State Board of Education and local school systems. She said TCS is looking into an online summer school program and an in-person summer school program. She said the school system was successful in its rapid response to coronavirus.
“We have sprinted through the marathon,” Neill said. “We made it!”
The board discussed coming up with a plan to allow students to stay engaged throughout the summer. Dr. Neill said she would like to continue resources for families.
Hewitt-Trussville’s graduation will be held on Tuesday, June 16, at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be at the HT Football Stadium. Each family will be allowed four tickets.
Trussville City Schools has also scheduled an end-of-school parade/caravan to celebrate Trussville students and to wish them well as they step into the freedom of summer. The parade will consist of six routes throughout Trussville between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2020.
