MONTGOMERY — The week-long tally of initial unemployment claims reached its lowest mark since March 21, 2020, the Alabama Department of Labor announced in its weekly report filed for the week of May 24 – May 30, 2020.
The department announced on Thursday that throughout the week there were 21,335 initial claims filed either online or by telephone. Of those 21, 335 claims, 12,739 are COVID-19 related.
Jefferson County continued to report the highest number of claims with 3,307.
Nationally, the number of those seeking unemployment claims has remained in the millions over the past 11 weeks. According to the US Department of Labor, more than 42.6 million people have claimed benefits since the coronavirus pandemic began impacting the US labor market. That number constitutes more than a quarter of the labor force.
Industries with the most number of claims within Alabama are: Industry Not Available (6,692), followed by Administrative and Support Services (2,170), Food Service and Drinking Places (1,743), and Transportation Equipment Manufacturing (1,598), General Merchandise Stores (556), and Education Services (509).
