BIRMINGHAM — It was a special season for an up-and-coming program.
The Hewitt-Trussville girls basketball team, led by head coach Tonya Hunter, wrapped up its 2020-21 season on Wednesday with a state runner-up finish in Class 7A.
Hunter’s girls took the floor in Bartow Arena on consecutive days, notching a 73-39 Final 4 victory over Theodore on Tuesday and bouncing right back for a 61-37 championship game loss to Hoover on Wednesday.
This season marks the program’s second runner-up finish since 2019 — also a Hunter-led group.
The Huskies (29-5) would place two players on the Class 7A all-tournament team, including senior Amiya Payne, who scored a total of 43 points in two days in Birmingham, and freshman Jordan Hunter, who went for 19 points and 10 assists for Hewitt-Trussville.
