TRUSSVILLE — Next to teachers, it’s hard to think of a more beloved figure in a child’s daily school routine than their bus driver. The first person they see each morning and the last person to say goodbye in the afternoon. It’s been called the ultimate part time job by many due to the limited hours and excellent benefits. Trussville City Schools will have two openings for drivers next month.

“Currently, the urgent need is for two full-time bus drivers,” TCS Public Relations Supervisor Jason Gaston said.
The positions are fully benefited with one of the best health insurance plans in the state as well as retirement options. The PEEHIP health insurance is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama.
Gaston said the candidates considered for these two positions, slated for a January 4 start date, would have to be currently credentialed drivers in the state of Alabama. Chief among the credentials, a valid CDL.
In addition to state health insurance and other employment benefits, Gaston said TCS offers competitive pay for bus drivers, who work on average 15-20 hours per week. The current pay range for drivers is $15,459.00 to $18,027.00. The exact amount depends on experience and years of service.
“Trussville proves an attractive system for bus driver candidates, as most of our routes are on the shorter side, whereas some school systems have very long, complex bus routes,” Gaston said. “Bus drivers always tell us they enjoy the flexible hours, the employment benefits, and the rapport they build with students and families.”
TCS buses transport about 2,500 students – just over half of the student population – each day across 63 routes. The TCS Transportation Department is led by Dale Posey and consists of 75 people including drivers, aides and mechanics. The award winning department is routinely recognized as one of the best in Alabama.
“Though candidates can apply through Teach in Alabama, we are encouraging them to reach out to our Transportation Department via Coordinator of Transportation Dale Posey (dale.posey@trussvillecityschools.com) or Administrative Assistant Sandy Dempsey (sandy.dempsey@trussvillecityschools.com),” Gaston said.
Candidates may also reach Transportation via phone at 205-228-3002.
Gaston said anyone not chosen for the two immediate openings should not despair as TCS accepts applications year-round.
