BIRMINGHAM — A 26-year-old woman who crashed her vehicle into a utility pole suffered from an apparent gunshot wound on Monday, March 7, shortly after 6 p.m.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced Morton dead.
“The preliminary investigation suggests shortly after patrol officers arrived on the scene, officers from the Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center alerted patrol officers to the whereabouts of a person of interest in the shooting,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “Officers went to a nearby apartment and made contact with the person of interest.”
An adult female was taken into custody.
“The person of interest was questioned by BPD Homicide detectives; BPD detectives will present the case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office,” Fitzgerald said.

This is Birmingham’s 26th murder investigation of 2022, including two justifiable death investigations.
