HOOVER — The Moody High School softball team, ranked No. 10 in Class 5A, came back to defeat the No. 1 team in Class 4A, Curry, at the Hoover Classic on Friday, April 22.
Ryleigh Hodges gave up six runs on five hits, but did enough to get the win as the Blue Devils rallied late for an 8-6 victory.
Kennedy Hockman knocked in a pair of runs to go ahead in the fifth inning when she singled, and an insurance run capped things for Moody.
“We’ve got a great team. We’ve battled in every game we’ve played since spring break,” Moody head coach Becky Seymour said after the victory. “We went into spring break on a high, and I knew it was a risk taking some time off but it’s really important to me that these girls are teenagers and they get to just enjoy life — especially in softball season when we have such a grueling schedule.”
Taylor Rogers went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, while Riley Mitchel was 1-for-2 with two walks and scored. Libby Higgins was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and scored. Emma Kile was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. Abi Gray went 1-for-2 and scored, while Maddie Barfield had an RBI.
“Our schedule has been incredibly difficult,” Seymour said. “We have faced much better pitching in every single game we’ve played. If you look at our schedule, it’s very difficult. There are not a lot of cake teams on there.”
The Blue Devils play next on Monday, April 25, hosting Oxford at 5 p.m.
