TRUSSVILLE — Area children interested in playing football have a chance to get on the gridiron and get a taste of what football is like with the Trussville Youth Football League. Registration is currently open to students in the first through sixth grades. Registration runs through May 1, 2022.
Teams play in the JSYFL (Jefferson Shelby Youth Football League), a full-contact competitive youth football league that plays with other communities in Jefferson & Shelby Counties.Players eligible will be either Trussville City Schools students or home-schooled or private school students who live and reside in the Trussville City Schools zone.
This league prepares eventual high school players by facing off against teams fielded by players who will eventually see the field against Hewitt-Trussville High School. Opponents include teams from Vestavia, Hoover, Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Chelsea and Thompson.
This is a great way to introduce prospective players to the game of football in a safe, fun and organized way.
“The Trussville Youth Football League and Jefferson Shelby Youth Football League takes pride in promoting safety in our organizations,” said Sam Stewart. “Our coaches are required to take safety training courses, and we follow the guidelines of the AHSAA for contact in practice. In addition, we provide top quality equipment that is reconditioned to factory specs on a regular basis in accordance manufacturer recommendations. All TYFL Board members have children paying in the league, so safety is a personal issue.”
Athletes will begin conditioning drills the week of July 25th, with the first official practice being on August 1. Practices are generally an hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours, and are held three to four times per week with weekends and Wednesday nights off. Regular season games are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“Joining the Trussville Youth Football League not only teaches your child discipline, character, toughness, and the fundamentals of football, but will also put the player in a great position to compete for championships regularly,” Stewart said. “In just the past few years, Trussville’s record is second to none in this league. Our teams have won and competed for multiple championships across all grade levels.”
Registration costs $300 perplayer, cut to $200 for additional siblings playing in the league. The fee covers the players’ uniforms, practice jerseys, a spirit pack and the use of league-provided helmet and shoulder pads for the season.
