JEFFERSON COUNTY — Human remains were found in a “freshly dug grave” on Friday, October 21, at approximately 10:45 a.m.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 3000 block of Raceway Parkway in Mount Olive to perform a welfare check on a male whose family had not heard from him in several months.
“Deputies were unable to get an answer at the door but did locate what appeared to be a freshly dug grave on the property,” Lieutenant Joney Money stated. “A specially trained cadaver dog was dispatched to the scene and did indicate the presence of human remains.”
Money stated after obtaining search warrants, the grave was opened, and what appeared to be a body was exhumed.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, while the Coroner’s Office is working to identify the remains and determine the cause and manner of death.
