BIRMINGHAM — Two men were arrested for the murder of a 43-year-old man that died days after a shooting in Birmingham.
According to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), Jeremy Lee Hawkins Jr., 18, and Jason Martez Johnson, 24, both of Birmingham, were arrested for the murder of Marchello Hopson, who sustained a gunshot wound injury during a reported assault in the 10 block of 64th Street North in Birmingham on Saturday, Oct. 22, at approximately 10:04 p.m.
“Birmingham 9-1-1 received a shot spotter notification and calls from citizens of shots fired at the Chevron,” Sergeant Monica Law stated. “Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim sitting in a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound.”
Hopson was transported to UAB Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 9:25 a.m.
Video surveillance from Chevron showed shots being fired from a vehicle before fleeing the scene.
“On October 26, 2022, as the investigation continued, detectives obtained warrants against both suspects for attempt to commit murder against both suspects. The suspects were held without bond at Jefferson County Jail,” Law stated. “Detectives were able to review the case again with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to obtain Capital Murder Warrants for both suspects.”
Hawkins and Johnson are being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
This is Birmingham’s 117th murder investigation of 2022, including seven justifiable death investigations.
