BIRMINGHAM — A Birmingham City Jail inmate was found dead in their cell during a routine check on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 2:50 p.m.
“A female inmate housed at the Birmingham City Jail was found unresponsive after corrections officers conducted a routine cell check,” Sergeant Monica Law stated. “A jail nurse was immediately called to the cell and attempted to resuscitate the inmate while awaiting Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.”
Birmingham Fire and Rescue was unable to revive the inmate, and she was pronounced deceased at 3:17 p.m.
“The inmate was housed alone in her cell,” Law stated. “This an unclassified death until a final assessment from the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.”
The inmate had been housed at the Birmingham City Jail since Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, for driving under the influence and traffic warrants.
The inmate’s identity will be withheld until the next of kin is notified.
“The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence,” Law stated. “The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed.”
The story will be updated when more information is available.
