TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Schools Dr. Interium Superintendent Dr. Frank P. Costanzo released a statement after the Moody environmental landfill fire was declared an emergency situation on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Costanzo’s statement reads:
“TCS has been in contact with the mayor, Jefferson County Health Department & St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency regarding the status of the landfill fire.
“Following those discussions and advice, I wanted you to know that we are working with the Jefferson County Health Department to secure air quality monitors at each school.
“Until we receive an “all clear”, we will take the necessary precautions to help ensure the safety of our students, including limiting all outdoor activities. students with respiratory issues will be encouraged to stay indoors. If your student suffers from a respiratory condition, please make sure that your school nurse is aware of this and has any necessary medication on hand to treat this condition if needed.
We encourage you to follow the advice of your healthcare provider regarding your student’s respiratory health. Further updates will be provided as received.”
According to the MFD Facebook page, the department initially responded to this incident in cooperation with Alabama Forestry.

“Along with other departments in the area, Moody assisted with a plan of containment for this incident,” the MFD Facebook page stated. “The objectives of that plan were to prevent injury, loss of life, and loss of residential property from the incident, and that plan was successful.”
MFD stated that from that point, Moody Fire has been monitoring the site and will continue to do so.

“Moody Fire stands ready to assist with any plan to the extent that our staffing and training will allow,” the MFD Facebook page stated.
