CALERA — A carjacking suspect is in custody after fleeing Birmingham and ending in a chase and crash in Calera on Wednesday, August 2.
The victim is the mother of a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy, sheriff’s officials confirmed. Her dog was still in the vehicle when it was stolen.
After exiting Birmingham, Calera police officers spotted the vehicle and began chasing the suspect. It ended when the suspect crashed on County Road 25 near Lhoist. Calera police Chief David Hyche said there were no serious injuries. The suspect was taken into custody.
The victim’s dog was recovered unharmed.
Hyche released a statement on the Calera police department Facebook page regarding the carjacking. “He made at least three bad choices this morning,’’ Hyche said. “He committed a violent crime against someone’s mother and took her car by force. He fled police. He came to Calera.”
