BIRMINGHAM — A 53-year-old Helena woman was found dead inside her private cell at Birmingham City Jail on August 8.
The deceased, Tambrala Leigh Smith, 53, of Helena, was an inmate at the Birmingham City Jail. She was booked into the jail on August 7 for public intoxication and trespassing.
Smith was found by jail staff unresponsive in her bed inside her private cell at 9:59 p.m. She was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s office performed an autopsy on August 9 and found no evidence of trauma or foul play, with the cause of death pending lab results.
The death is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.
