BIRMINGHAM – Birmingham police are investigating a shooting at Somerset at Trussville apartments in Birmingham near Trussville on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Birmingham police officers arrived at the 3500 block of Mary Taylor Road at around 11 a.m. on a person-shot call.
Officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Personnel arrived on the scene and transported him to UAB Hospital. He was originally thought to be suffering life-threatening injuries but further examination downgraded his status to non-life threatening.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said a physical altercation between the shooter and his girlfriend’s male friend led to the shooting.
“The shooter lives here with his girlfriend,” he said. “The victim is an adult male friend of the girlfriend. We don’t believe this argument was a love triangle or a lover’s quarrel. We just think it was a heated argument that turned physical. The shooter remained on scene and actually called 911 to seek help for the gunshot victim.”
Officer Fitzgerald said the shooter has been cooperative.
While Trussville police don’t believe there to be a threat to nearby Magnolia Elementary School, they have increased police presence around campus out of an abundance of caution.
The District Attorney will later determine if charges need to be filed.
